Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, San Jose State University
Research
Emily was a graduate student in Dr. Jim Harvey’s Vertebrate Ecology Lab of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, Moss Landing, California. Collaborators on her thesis project, 'Predicting southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) movements,' were Dr. M. T. Tinker, USGS/UCSC and Dr. G. A. Breed, Harvard University. The overall objective of the project was to develop and apply a mechanistic movement model that describes the spatial use of southern sea otters to predict their movements in the event of an oil or other point-source pollution spill. Quantifying southern sea otter spatiotemporal use of the California coastline would provide information for best management practices for sea otters in the event of large-scale input of pollution to near-shore ecosystems. When she is not at MLML, Emily is practicing yoga, hiking, or reading.
